MG is to mark the opening of four new dealerships since it announced a quest to recruit 30 new dealers - including a £30 million flagship outlet for the brand in London’s Piccadilly.

Other dealerships have also opened for business in Guildford, Exeter and Maidstone.

The Longbridge-based car-maker recently identified 30 ‘hot spots’ it is targeting as it expands its dealer network, having opened 26 dealerships in the last 12 months alone.

The expansion drive comes on the back of a successful year for MG in 2014, which saw it lay claim to being the fastest-growing automotive brand in Britain.

Its sales increased by 361 per cent from just 513 cars in 2013 to 2,326 in 2014 - a year which saw UK car sales return to pre-recession levels.

Overall the UK market grew by 9.3 per cent over the previous year, with MG seeing its sales increase by 38 times that figure.

MG’s dealer ‘hit-list’ was drawn-up by the firm’s franchise development team, which has identified locations where it feels dealers are needed.

MG’s flagship London outlet, which is due to open within the next few weeks, is located next to The Royal Academy of Arts and directly opposite Fortnum & Mason, in what MG described as “one of the most sought-after retail locations in the world”.

It said having a flagship presence in the heart of the UK capital was “a vital move”.

The six-car showroom is housed in a seven-storey Georgian-fronted building at 47/48 Piccadilly and will incorporate a showroom with interactive media centre so customers can configure their own car.

As part of the investment, totalling almost £30 million, the building has been refurbished and upgraded to accommodate the MG showroom.

MG will run the flagship showroom on the ground floor with offices in the basement. Above are six floors of executive offices.

Matthew Cheyne, MG’s head of marketing, said: “This really is a fabulous central London location where the City of Westminster and West End theatre land merge.

“It shows that MG is really back and is becoming a major force again in the British automotive industry.

“This address is, without a doubt, one of the most sought-after international locations and we can’t wait to do business from there.

“If anyone had any doubts about MG’s commitment to the future, this is a hugely positive statement that MG is back and here to stay.

“This is a very significant investment by MG and we are immensely proud of this fantastic showroom.

“You simply could not get a more prestigious location in Britain.”

In advance of the central London opening, Normandy Garage in Guildford, became the 26th new MG dealer to be appointed within the last 12 months

A family-owned business, the six-car showroom, backed by four workshop bays, is mid-way between Guildford town centre and Aldershot.

Other MG outlets that have recently opened for business are Hendy MG in Exeter and Maidstone MG, which is run by the FG Barnes and Sons group, which operates across Surrey and Kent.

By the end of 2015 MG is aiming to have more than 80 full dealerships.

Dealer expansion is key to MG’s new model plans. The car-maker is soon to launch a new MG6 and next year will see the arrival of the MG GS, its first SUV.

MG’s head of sales, Sam Burton, said: “We urgently need good quality dealers to represent MG in a number of key open points where we know demand for our cars is amazingly high, and growing on a daily basis.

“We’ve established a dealer task force here and their job is to find the right people to become MG dealers.

“It’s a high priority job for us now and will offer a great opportunity for the dealers we appoint.”
