Around 100 workers at one of Birmingham's longest-established call centres face a 90-mile daily commute to Leicester - or the potential loss of their jobs.
Chubb Fire and Security has told staff it is relocating its customer service centre from Birmingham to Leicester by next May.
The Birmingham office has been based in Lionel Street, in the Jewellery Quarter, for more than 30 years but the lease on the property ran out in 2012 and a six-month arrangement has been in place for nearly two years.
Now workers are being given the chance to move to Leicester - by undertaking 90-mile round trips.
A worker, who asked not to be named, said: "There had been rumours for months but it was still a shock to be told the office was being moved to Leicester.
"They are putting us in an impossible position. Either we commute all the way to Leicester on a daily basis or we risk losing our jobs. Everybody here is very worried for the future."
A spokeswoman for the company said: "The proposals are subject to the appropriate consultation and no decisions will be made until the end of consultation.
"If, following consultation, the proposals do go ahead, then all the employees would be given the option of continuing their employment in Leicester which would be the company's preference.
"Based on current proposals, it is anticipated that the Birmingham facility would remain in operation until May 2015.
"The company's lease on the Birmingham property came to an end in 2012 and a rolling six month arrangement has been in place since.
"As such, a review of alternative locations has been undertaken, with the proposal being that Chubb's Customer Service Centre would relocate into an owned premises in Leicester."
She confirmed 100 workers were based at Lionel Street.
