Jean Templeton, St Basils

Jean Templeton is chief executive of St Basil’s, the Birmingham-based youth homelessness charity which has been operating for more than 40 years. St Basils helps more than 4,500 16-25 year-olds across the West Midlands each year, either with direct accommodation or advice and support. Jean Templeton is the third sector assembly champion for the Housing and Regeneration Network and a member of the City Housing Partnership executive board. She contributed to the Ministerial Advisory Group on Homelessness.

David Strudley is chief executive of the Acorns Children’s Hospice. The charity, with hospices in Selly Oak, Worcester and Walsall, was set up in 1988 and has helped more than 2,500 children and their families, providing support for life-limited or life-threatened babies, children and young people. Sheldon schoolboy Harry Moseley died in his mother Georgina’s arms following an inoperable brain tumour. In his short life he raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for cancer charities by selling beaded bracelets. After his death his mother carried on his legacy by raising more money for the Harry Moseley charity. She documented his story in a book, “Making it Happen.”

Joy Warmington is chief executive of brap, an independent organisation that develops equality strategies reflecting the needs of communities. Among others she works with Macmillan Cancer Care and Birmingham Children’s Centres. She has also worked as a local improvement officer for Government, drawing on her experience of the voluntary sector, equality and social exclusion.

Louise Teboul, Common Purpose

Common Purpose runs leadership development programmes in cities across the world to enable people to work together to solve common problems. Louise Teboul is the operations director for Common Purpose in the Midlands and a member of the senior management team. An ex-PR professional, she designs and delivers courses for senior and emerging leaders and many of Birmingham’s key public sector organisations and major employers use her courses to develop their staff.

James McLaughlin, Cure Leukaemia

James McLaughlin is chief executive officer at Cure Leukaemia in Birmingham, a post he has held for nearly four years. Before that he was commercial director at Warwickshire County Cricket Club, just one of a number of commercial roles in sport he has held. Cure Leukaemia was established in 2003 to allow patients in the region with blood cancer to access effective new treatments. The charity was instrumental in securing the £2.2 million needed to build the Centre for Clinical Haematology at Birmingham’s QE hospital.

Lord Bob Edmiston recently quit the House of Lords to spend more time on his charity work. He is one of the UK’s biggest philanthropic donors and wants to devote more of his time to religious and educational charities. His IM property and automotive group supports his charity Christian Vision with substantial donations. Lord Edmiston is in the top 10 list of Britain’s biggest philanthropists, having donated to religious, humanitarian and educational charities through Christian Vision. Since 1998 he has donated well over £300 million to various causes. Christian Vision sponsors three city academies in the Midlands including the Grace Academies in Darlaston, Solihull and Coventry. Teaching is based on Christian principles, encouraging decency, respect and compassion.

Louise McCathie, Birmingham Children’s Hospital

Louise McCathie is director of fundraising at Birmingham Children’s Hospital Foundation Trust. She has spent most of her career working with charities, having been fundraising manager for Mencap, and also worked with the British Heart Foundation and Childline. She joined the children’s hospital in 2009. While at the BCH she has negotiated long term partnerships with supporters and led her team to triple fundraising income. In 2014 she received a Future Face of Business award from Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce.

Nic Skipwith, Macmillan

Nicola Skipwith is the area fundraising manager for the Birmingham and Black Country region of Macmillan Cancer Support. She leads a team which supports fundraising efforts through businesses and individuals. Macmillan provides practical, medical and financial support to cancer patients and their families, and lobbies for better cancer care.

Hanna Sebright, Midlands Air Ambulance

Hanna Sebright is chief executive of the Midlands Air Ambulance charity which covers a population of six million. Appointed in 2009 she is also vice-chair of the Association of Air Ambulances. During her time in charge she established the Midlands Air Ambulance as an independent charity. She has overseen the redevelopment of three airbases, the relocation of the charity’s HQ to Stourbridge and the £39 million tendering for a replacement aircraft fleet. At the same time she has reduced operating costs.
