Following a spate of surveys which placed Birmingham among some of the world’s top business and leisure travel destinations the city has not fared so well when it comes to the reputation of its hotels.

The hotel comparison site trivago’s Reputation Ranking 2015 survey, which ranks 100 global destinations according to the reputation of their hotels, was based on over 140 million online reviews.

Birmingham was placed 96th, behind Manchester at number 87 in the list, though London failed to make the top 100.

Other UK cities fared better, with York, Edinburgh and Liverpool all making the top 50.

The survey also revealed the average hotel price for a double room in Birmingham in 2014 was £75.

Sanya in China had the most highly rated hotels in the world, according to the survey.

The remaining cities in the top ten were Hanoi (Vietnam), (Italy), Fès (Morocco), Suzhou (China), Cusco (Peru), Sedona Arizona, USA), Kraków (Poland), Dresden (Germany) and Dubrovnik (Croatia).

For the UK York fared the best, in 35th place, with Edinburgh and Liverpool not far behind at 45th and 48th respectively.

Hotels in York were praised for their character, comfortable rooms, good food and excellent service.

Guests in Edinburgh praised hotels for their location and spacious rooms, while hotels in Liverpool were praised for their atmosphere and attractive interiors.

A trivago spokesperson said: “On the other end of the scale, both Manchester and Birmingham were placed in the bottom 20, in positions 87 and 96 respectively.

“Hotels in both destinations were criticised for their bad value for money and poor quality rooms.”

The spokesperson added that London was generally towards the bottom of the list but had not qualified at all this year and was generally criticised for its “small but expensive hotel rooms”.

Birmingham recently made it into the top 20 European business travel destinations for the first time – and bumped Berlin off the list i n the process.

The city was number 18 on a list for 2014 compiled by Egencia, the business travel offshoot of travel company Expedia.
