Passengers at Birmingham Airport are facing possible delays this weekend after ground staff served notice of 48-hour strike action.

Workers from Swissport, the company which provides around 150 ground and baggage crew at Birmingham, are planning a two-day walkout at airports across the UK including at East Midlands as well.

The staff are members of trade union Unite and are striking over pay following an 84 per cent vote in favour of industrial action which is due to start on December 9.

In October, Scandinavian firm Aviator announced it was pulling staff out of operations at Birmingham Airport and these services have since been taken over by Swissport.

A spokesman for Unite said the union was still in discussions with management at Swissport in a bid to reach a negotiated settlement and over averting the industrial action.

One worker who contacted the Birmingham Mail said: "We've taken over all of Aviator's work and they need to pay us what we are worth."

In August, passengers had to wait two hours to collect their belongings after staff shortages with Aviator left passengers fuming over the busy bank holiday weekend.

And a similar fate befell those travelling to Birmingham Airport in mid-September.

Swissport had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.
